The count, a famous American born racecar driver was also notably the originator of the national color coding system for Formula 1 racing cars. At his insistence, in the days prior to corporate sponsorship, national colors were rolled out for the very first time at the very next race in which he was scheduled to appear, a grand prix in Naas, Ireland. Although the Count didn't make it, the Naas race marked the debut of British green, a color that would grace British racecars for years to come. Initially, the Brits had wanted to go with either red, white or blue in homage to the Union Jack, but since Blue had been claimed by France, Red by Italy and White by Germany, they decided to go with Green. Why? The same article referenced above explained: "English cars will be painted green in compliment to Ireland... so that spectators will be easily able to distinguish the car's nationality, however fast they dash by.

(The article also mentions the exact moment British Racing Green was unveiled: "Punctually at 7 a.m. on the morning of the 2nd July Mr. Edge driving the first of the English green cars, will be dispatched... ")

All this talk of British Racing Green leads us squarely into a discussion of another type of British green. This time it's a blend of some of the finest green teas being produced in Britain's former colonies of Kenya and Malawi. Although green teas weren't commonly produced in these countries at the time of the race referenced earlier, exceptional raw leaf has been grown in both since those days. In recent years, forward thinking Kenyan and Malawian producers have begun experimenting with and producing premium green teas for export. We've crafted this fabulous blend using luxurious examples of both. Not only is the tea rich and loaded with expansive green notes of cut grass, honey and floral tones. Brew a fresh pot and think of England. The secret is to use water that is about 180'F or 80'C. Place 1 -1 1/2 teaspoons of leaves in you cup and let the tea steep for about 3 minutes and then begin enjoying a cup of enchantment - do not remove the leaves from the cup. Once the water level is low - add more water, and so on and so on - until the flavor of the tea is exhausted. Look at the pattern of the leaves in the brew - they foretell life.

Brewing Cold

(to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 teaspoons of tea into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the leaves. Add ice and top up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water.]
