(What's an orinka? We'll get to that in a moment.) Serengeti Blend is comprised of rich, exceptionally flavory Kenyan and Malawian teas, manufactured to be captivating, bold and strong, much like the Masai people who inhabit its namesake, the fabled Serengeti region of eastern Africa. (In earlier times known as Maasailand by outsiders.) The Masai of the Serengeti, famous for their colorful clothing and traditional dances in which dancers leap into the air, were also once known for their prowess in battle. (And here we'll provide the definition of an orinka: a throwing club that could be thrown accurately up to 70 meters - 230 feet! Suffice it to say the Masai are a formidable people.)

A tea named after the Masai's traditional homeland should be as strong and powerful as the people who live there. To this end, Serengeti Blend brings together three east African black teas, each of which on their own would be considered exceptional self-drinkers. Satemwa Black Dryer Mouth, a byproduct of the CTC tea manufacturing process offers rich astringent notes and deep floral tones. Changoi Lion's Mane, an exceptional Kenyan delivers juicy malt and rich African nuance. Kambaa, grown with rigid quality control by free-hold tea farmers likewise delivers brisk malt with a thick mouth feel that's a natural with a splash of milk. Together, the three deliver a cup that will roll around in your mouth like elephants pounding across the Serengeti itself. Try pairing this deeply nuanced blend with an English style breakfast - it's the perfect morning pick-me-up!

Tea Type: Black

Country: Kenya

Region: Kericho + Nandi

Grade: BP1 (Broken Pekoe 1)

Altitude: 4500' ft. above sea level

Manufacturer Type: CTC (Cut, Torn and Curled)

Ingredients: Luxury green tea.

Cup Characteristics: Tea with the body of a lion and the flavorful speed of a gazelle. The secret is to use water that is about 180'F or 90'C. Place about 1 - 1 1/2 teaspoons in your cup, let the tea steep for about 3 minutes and then begin enjoying a cup of enchantment - do not remove the leaves from the cup. Once the water level is low - add more water, and so on and so on - until the flavor of the tea is exhausted.

Brewing Cold

(to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 teaspoons of tea into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the leaves. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water]. Please note that this tea may tend to go cloudy or milky when poured over ice; a perfectly normal characteristic of some high quality black teas and nothing to worry about!
