  • According to Sri Lankan folklore, if you plant lemongrass in your garden it will keep snakes out of your yard. (Maybe that's why it's also known as Barbed Wire Grass in some parts of the world.) While a snake repelling plant is a bonus if you happen to live in a part of the world that boasts over 300 snakes with enough venom to kill a grown adult, what benefits does lemongrass have for us here in the West?

According to researchers at Israel's Ben Gurion University, Lemongrass, (Latin: Cymbopogon citratus), has the ability to cause apoptosis (a fancy word for programmed cell death) in cancer cells. The studies were conducted using an amount of concentrated citral, lemongrass' key molecule, equal to that found in a cup of lemongrass tea.

While the Ben Gurion studies, completed in 2006 indicate a definite positive to ingesting lemongrass, the plant's healthy qualities have actually been known for centuries. In Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, lemongrass was, and still is, commonly brewed into tea that is sipped to remedy gastric issues. Ayurvedic practitioners also believe the herb can stimulate perspiration, helping cool the body in hot weather and assisting in lowering fevers. (If you want to think of lemongrass as a wonder herb, that's OK with us!)

In our search for the World's finest lemongrass, we found this shining example from one of Egypt's most exclusive producers. Exquisitely organic, the herb is grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides under all-natural conditions. The result is a stunningly scented and richly flavored herb that can be brewed on its own or added to herbal, or green and black tea blends. (And hey, it might help repel the odd snake as well.)

    Try this fabulous lemongrass tea!

  • Brewing Hot

Bring filtered or freshly drawn cold water to a rolling boil. Place 1 slightly heaping teaspoon of herb & fruit blend, 1 tea bag or 1 Q3 portion control pack for each 7-9oz/200-260ml of fluid volume in the teapot. Pour the boiling water into the teapot. Cover and let steep for 5-10 minutes according to taste (the longer the steeping time, the better the flavor as more fruit and herb flavor is extracted). Garnish and sweeten to taste.

    Brewing Cold

Iced tea brewing method (Pitcher): (to make 1 liter/quart): Place 12 slightly heaping teaspoons of herb & fruit blend, 6 tea bags or 6 Q3 portion packs into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Using filtered or freshly drawn cold water, boil and pour 1 1/3 cups/315ml over the herb & fruit blend. Steep for 5-10 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the tea or removing the tea bags. Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced herb & fruit tea is to increase the strength of hot brew since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water.

Iced tea brewing method (Individual Serving): Place 2 slightly heaping teaspoons of herb & fruit blend, 1 tea bag or 1 Q3 portion control pack into a teapot for each serving required. Using filtered or freshly drawn cold water, boil and pour 6-7oz/170-200ml per serving over the herb & fruit blend. Cover and let steep for 5-10 minutes. Add hot tea to a 12oz/375ml acrylic glass filled with ice, straining the tea or removing the bags. Not all of the tea will fit, allowing for approximately an additional 1/2  serving. Garnish and sweeten to taste. A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed herb & fruit tea is to increase the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted.
