When you travel around the planet in search of the world's finest teas you learn a thing or two about jet lag... extreme jet lag. On one trip to visit with an Indian supplier, our Master Blender set off from our Canadian office in Toronto, flew 8 hours to Zurich, another hour to Rome, then 15 hours to Colombo, Sri Lanka where he spent 2 hours laid over, flew to Chennai, India, spent a further 8 hours laid over, where he discovered that his luggage hadn't arrived and finally hopping a flight to Calcutta. All told, from the time he left the office until he reached the guesthouse where he would be staying, 42 hours had elapsed!

Suffice it to say that on a trip like that, the hours, days, customs clearings, airports, meals taken at odd times, countries, languages and time zones blend into a jet-lag so thick it feels like walking you're walking through soup. In a word, it's bonkers. What does it feel like? If asked, you might well have heard our Master Bender say something along the lines of, "I feel like I've been hit by a bus!" Or, "I feel like I've been shot out of a cannon."

Now, since these trips are business trips, not vacations, when Metropolitan personnel arrive overseas they have to gather themselves quickly and conduct business. So, in addition to learning a thing or two about jet lag, we've also learned a few ways to combat the affliction. In addition to staying hydrated, exercising and eating well, we've found that a nice cup of tea can help out nicely. To that end we're pleased to offer some of our Master Blender's secret Jet Lag tea recipes. This fragrant blend of green teas, herbs and all-natural strawberry flavoring will help clear your mind after long flights and have you ready to face a new day... in Kuala Lumpur, Moscow, Timbuktu or wherever else you might find yourself!

Brewing Hot

When preparing by the cup, this tea can be used repeatedly - about 3 times. The secret is to use water that is about 180'F or 90'C. Place 1 teaspoon of leaves in you cup and let the tea steep for about 3 minutes and then begin enjoying a cup of enchantment - do not remove the leaves from the cup. Once the water level is low - add more water, and so on and so on - until the flavor of the tea is exhausted. Look at the pattern of the leaves in the brew - they foretell life.

Brewing Cold

(to make 1 liter/quart): Place 6 teaspoons of tea into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher. Pour 1 1/4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 5 minutes. Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water. Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the leaves. Add ice and top up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste. [A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to double the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water.]
