In terms of health and wellness, black teas often get a bad rap. Most research regarding the health benefits of tea is conducted on green varieties and subsequently most people, when searching for a healthy, antioxidant-rich drink, reach for green teas over black ones. While it is true that green tea contains ECGC, the cancer-fighting flavonoid epigallocatechin gallat, while black tea does not, some black tea varieties do contain high levels of antioxidants and polyphenols. In fact, this fabulous blend of high grown Kenyan teas ranks right up there in the antioxidant department alongside many of the great green teas of the world.
To develop the blend, our Master Taster selected the following three East of Rift Valley teas. Tests conducted at the Industrial Biodevelopment Laboratory in Toronto, Canada, revealed that all three possess exceptionally high antioxidant ratings in addition to their superior flavor.
Changoi Lion's Mane - Characterized by its hairy appearance, Changoi's teas are sought after for its immense strength and captivating body. Lion's Mane adds malty tones and a thick astringency to the blend.
Lelsa Dryer Mouth - Dryer Mouth Teas are a relatively new development in the tea world. A cross between Orthodox and CTC production teas, Dryer Mouth is literally pulled from the dryer before sorting during the CTC process. This grade has the highest polyphenol count of all grades.
Lelsa FBOP - FBOP (Flower Broken Orange Pekoe) is known as one of Kenya's more flavory orthodox grades. The tea exhibits a sweet, leafy earthiness and takes milk exceptionally well.
